I really didn’t know what to expect with this product from the description, but I ordered it as the manufacturer recommended its use prior to painting. Upon receiving it and reading the product composition and application instructions, I see that the chemistry involved is quite sound. It is a phosphate/zinc composition that forms an iron phosphate passivation layer on the metal and the zinc compound then provides (albeit thin) a galvanized surface layer. Worked very well when used as directed. It is important to keep the surface wet for 20 minutes as they direct so the chemical reactions can take place.

When the POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is just dry to the touch, with slight finger-drag remaining, normally in the 2-5 hour range, it’s ready for the POR-15 Caliper Paint to be applied. Open the can of POR-15 Caliper Paint, stir thoroughly, and apply the first coat in thin but even strokes. When the first coat is dry (3 -4 hours), apply a second coat to achieve a beautiful ceramic-like finish. These products should only be handled when wearing latex gloves, eye protection, and NOSHA approved respirator. Always work in a well ventilated area.
