Rumor has it that single cans of Heady Topper DIPA were recently selling in LA for $25 per can. And selling well. We don’t know if we’d pay that much but we’d surely consider it because this well-balanced, slightly fruity double IPA packs a subtle punch that’s more like a friendly nudge and leaves you with a clean, if slightly bitter, aftertaste. Like the European beers already featured in other beer rankings, you’ll need to travel to the brewer’s hometown to pick up some Heady Topper (unless you want to pay $25 per can in LA). ABV 8%
Where do we hope to find the most beer fans ? Some cities are known as beer cities and here is one of them. Living up to Australia’s sunny but chilled-out reputation, Melbourne’s breweries and bars are prime spots for a laid-back afternoon of sampling and conversation. The taps are always pouring local craft options at The Catfish, a casual, no-frills neighborhood bar that doubles as a live music venue and, improbably, a Philly cheesesteak emporium. Moon Dog Brewing calls its on-site tap room a “tropical brewery bar paradise,” and the palm tree-decked, skylit space is an ideal environment to try a seasonal, experimental beer like the Splice of Heaven pine-lime ice cream IPA. Thunder Road, a larger brewery in downtown Melbourne, has been turning out complex, interesting beers for 10 years.
