Playground design solutions in China: Underwater-themed playgrounds transform parks into ocean worlds full of coral tunnels, submarine towers, and friendly sea creatures. Shades of blue and turquoise set a calming tone, while bright icons like jellyfish, sharks, and turtles add excitement. Water play is a major trend, incorporating spray features, tide pools, and interactive pumps that encourage sensory exploration. Soft, rounded shapes mimic waves and sea plants, creating safe climbing environments. Educational signs about marine life and conservation encourage environmental awareness. Many marine designs use recycled plastics or sustainable materials, supporting ocean preservation messages. Play features often include treasure chests, shipwreck slides, and sand-castle construction zones for imaginative storytelling. Municipalities appreciate that marine playgrounds attract tourism and create memorable identity for waterfront parks. As climate awareness grows, ocean-themed designs are increasingly integrated with science education, helping children understand ecosystems while they play. Safety continues to shape indoor playground architecture, influencing material selection, layout planning, and equipment engineering. Soft foam padding, rounded edges, and impact-absorbing flooring minimize injuries during active play. Modern playgrounds incorporate transparent safety panels for better visibility, allowing parents and staff to supervise easily. Designers pay close attention to traffic flow, reducing bottlenecks between high-activity zones. Age-specific play areas prevent toddlers from mingling with older children engaged in rougher activities. Many new playgrounds use antimicrobial surfaces and easy-clean materials to support hygiene. Fire safety features, emergency exits, and accessible pathways are also critical components of current design standards. Safety-conscious planning builds parent trust and enhances customer satisfaction. As playgrounds evolve, combining safety with creativity remains essential. Designers continue to explore innovations that protect children without compromising play value.
Not all buildings bear the same cost. Some indoor parks have been created in simple, cost-effective buildings with relatively modest capex. Of course, we would always rather as much of the capex as possible be where the visitor notices it and where it drives visitation and repeats. Capital is generally better spent on the experiences rather than on the building, which, in most cases, will not be the motivating factor for a visit. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is an exception, as its iconic roof and branding may have been enough to motivate visits from those seeing it from the air and in promotional materials. It’s not all bad news, though. Generally, indoor parks have a smaller footprint. Therefore, land costs may be lower (although, given the economic impacts parks deliver, ESAC believes parks should not be paying for their land, and we can help demonstrate why to governments or landlords).
In practical terms, when preparing a feasibility study, the combination of these busted myths means that with flatter seasonality, we may have fewer visitors in the park on our design day. The shorter stay may reduce the peak on-site number of visitors we are designing for. But, by contrast, the compact footprint means they will do more experiences per hour, pushing ride capacities up. There are many factors to look at in a nuanced way. There is no copy-and-paste of an indoor park in sight. We’re excited to see where developers go with innovations in indoor parks. We love being a part of this journey for feasibility studies for the next generation of parks worldwide.
